It is one of the most famous destination in Laos. The name of the Plain of Jars comes from thousands of stone jars scattered over a large area. Some people believe that these jars were used for storing wine between the 10th and 13th centuries. There are many legends about it but nobody knows for sure what they were used for.
The Plain of Jars is the name given to a large area of limestone karst that has been riddled with cavities and caves for centuries. In addition to the jars themselves, there are also other stone artifacts on display at this archaeological site, including pottery, glass bead, stone tool. These artifacts indicate that this was once an important prehistoric settlement.
The first archaeological excavations at the site began in 1930 by French archaeologist Madeleine Colani, who found evidence of human habitation going back as far as 2000 B.C.. In 1961, she returned with further excavations, which uncovered more ancient pottery fragments and burial sites.
In 1970-71 two French archaeologists (Jean Deuve and Jean Louis Capitan) found more than 3,000 jars in the area known as Xieng Khoung District in northern Laos. They also discovered some evidence of human remains being buried in jars alongside other grave goods such as potsherds or animal bones.

Plain of jars site 1 is about 8 km from the city center (phonsava). It takes about 30 minutes to drive there by car or motorbike with a local guide. The place is located Ban thong hay, so if you are going there in any time open 8am-4:30pm, it will be easy for you to reach there.
Plain of jars site 2 located ban nakho about 20 km from phonsavan but it takes around 40 minutes to reach there by car or motorbike with a local guide.
